Winter to Summer: How Banff Transforms With the Seasons

One of the most magical things about Banff and Lake Louise is how dramatically the landscape shifts between seasons. In winter, the Rockies are wild and snow covered, with powder days, frozen lakes, and cozy après. But as the snow melts and the sun climbs higher in the sky, the park quietly transforms into a vibrant summer playground.

As we say goodbye to another unforgettable ski season, here’s a look at how Banff transitions from winter to summer, and why it’s worth experiencing both.

Winter Season

Winter in Banff is full of adventure and classic mountain experiences. Snow covers the peaks, lakes freeze over, and the air stays crisp. Skiers and snowboarders make the most of the days, and the town feels cozy with lights, warm drinks, and steam rising from outdoor hot tubs.

Winter Highlights:

  • Deep snow at Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise, and Mt. Norquay
  • Frozen waterfalls and canyon ice walks
  • Cozy après scenes and stargazing on clear nights
  • Outside adventures such as, snowshoeing, dogsledding, and ice skating

But as spring sunshine starts to soften the snowpack, the mountains begin to wake up in a new way.

Summer Season

Come late spring, the ice begins to melt, trails reappear, and wildlife returns to the valley. Banff shifts into long days, turquoise lakes, and endless ways to explore on foot, by bike, or paddle.

Summer Highlights:

  • Hiking trails and mountain views
  • Paddling on Lake Louise or Moraine Lake
  • Scenic drives and wildlife spotting in early mornings and golden hours
  • Warm afternoons on patios or near the water
  • Sightseeing gondolas and summer chairlifts at Banff Sunshine and Lake Louise offering high-alpine hiking, wildflower viewing, and panoramic views without the climb

Whether you're summiting a peak or taking in a sunset from Vermilion Lakes, summer in Banff feels expansive and full of activities.

It’s Worth Experiencing Both

The change from winter to summer in Banff is always impressive. If you’ve only seen the mountains in one season, it’s worth coming back to see how different things feel when the snow melts, or returns.
