Which Ikon Pass is Right for You? A Guide for SkiBig3 Visitors

Planning a ski trip to Banff and Lake Louise is easy to dream about, but choosing the right pass can feel a lot less straightforward. With three world-class resorts in Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise Ski Resort, and Mt. Norquay, SkiBig3 offers one of the most iconic ski experiences in North America. The question is: which Ikon Pass will help you make the most of it?

The Ikon Pass unlocks access to SkiBig3 along with 70+ other resorts worldwide, but not all passes offer the same level of access, flexibility, or price. In this guide, we’ll break down the different Ikon Pass options, explain how they work at SkiBig3, and help you choose the best pass for your travel style, budget, and ski goals. By the end, you’ll know exactly which Ikon Pass is right for your Banff and Lake Louise ski trip, and how to get the most value out of every run.

With access to 77 destinations across 5 continents and 13 countries, the Ikon Pass is built for skiers and snowboarders who want flexibility and value. There are three main options to choose from:

1. Ikon Pass (Full Pass)

If you want maximum flexibility, this is it. The Ikon Pass offers unlimited access to 18 destinations and up to 7 days at 57 others, with no blackout dates. It’s a great choice if you like to keep your plans open, chase powder when it falls, or travel to multiple destinations throughout the season. You’ll also get added perks like food and retail discounts, friends and family lift tickets, and savings with travel partners. Flexible payment options and refundable add-ons make it easier to lock in early.

2. Base Pass

Looking for a more budget-friendly option? The Base Pass offers excellent value while still unlocking a huge range of skiing. You’ll get unlimited access to 15 destinations and up to 5 days at 55 others. There are some blackout dates (typically around major holidays), but if your travel dates are flexible, this pass delivers strong value. You’ll still enjoy perks like discounts on food, retail, and limited friends and family tickets.

3. Ikon Session Pass

Only planning a short trip? The Session Pass is a simple, flexible option. Choose between 2, 3, or 4 days of skiing at select destinations. There are no set mountains or fixed dates, you just use your days when it works for you. Like the Base Pass, blackout dates apply during peak holiday periods.

With your Ikon Pass, you can ski or ride across Banff Sunshine Village, Lake Louise Ski Resort, and Mt. Norquay, unlocking nearly 8,000 acres of terrain in the heart of Banff National Park. No lift reservations required.

Beyond the skiing, your pass also comes with added perks including lodging deals in Banff and Lake Louise, 25% off 1-day adult lift tickets for friends and family (purchased in person) and up to 20% off rentals and 10% off private guides and lessons when bundled with a SkiBig3 vacation package.

Here’s how each pass works locally;

Ikon Pass: 7 days total at SkiBig3 resorts with no blackout dates (7 days can be used among the three resorts)

Base Pass: 5 days total at SkiBig3 resorts with blackout dates on Dec 26-30, 2026; Jan 16-17, 2027; and Feb 13-14, 2027 (5 days can be used among the three resorts)

Session Pass: 2-4 total days at SkiBig3 resorts with blackout dates on Dec 26-30, 2026; Jan 16-17, 2027; and Feb 13-14, 2027 (2-4 days can be used among the three resorts)

Not sure which one fits? Start with how you like to travel:

The bucket list traveler

If Banff has been on your radar for years and you want to experience it all, the Base Pass or Ikon Pass are both great options. With 5 or 7 days, you’ll have plenty of time to explore all three resorts at your own pace.

Powder Chaser

If you’re following storms and want the freedom to ski whenever conditions are best, the full Ikon Pass is the way to go. No blackout dates means no missed POW days, and with three resorts to choose from at SkiBig3, you can always find the best snow.

Holiday Visitor

Planning a trip over Christmas, New Year’s, or a long weekend? You’ll want the Ikon Pass. With no blackout dates, you can enjoy SkiBig3 during the most festive (and popular) times of the season without restrictions.

Budget Conscious

If you’re looking to keep costs down while still experiencing SkiBig3, the Base Pass is a great fit. Plan around blackout dates, and you’ll still get 5 incredible days on the slopes at a lower price point.

Multi-destination Skier or Snowboarder

If your winter plans include Banff and a few other Canadian Ikon destinations as well, the full Ikon Pass gives you the most flexibility and value across multiple trips.

If you’re thinking about getting an Ikon Pass, earlier is always better. Early bird pricing for the 26/27 season is available until April 16, 2026, and this is typically when you’ll find the lowest prices.

Current early pricing before April 16, 2026 (adult 23+):

Ikon Pass: $1,889 CAD or $1,399 USD

Ikon Base Pass: $1,279 CAD or $949 USD

Ikon Session 2-Day Pass: $399 CAD or $299 USD

Buying early also gives you access to renewal perks, flexible payment options, and the peace of mind that your season is locked in.

Lock in Banff and Lake Louise for 26/27

When it comes to choosing the right Ikon Pass, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, just the option that fits your plans best. If you want total flexibility and zero restrictions, the Ikon Pass is hard to beat. If you’re focused on value and can plan around a few key dates, the Base Pass is a great choice. Either way, one thing’s certain: your next ski trip to Banff and Lake Louise is going to be unforgettable.
