What to Pack for a Ski Trip to Banff and Lake Louise

Preparing for a ski trip to Banff and Lake Louise and not sure what to pack? This guide provides a comprehensive breakdown of everything you’ll need to après in style, keep warm on the slopes and unwind after a big day up the mountain.

Winter in the Canadian Rockies can be cold, particularly through January and February. Keeping warm takes the right layers and a little local know-how. You’ll need:

  • A wind-proof and waterproof shell jacket and snow pants
  • Insulated jacket (e.g a puffer) - wear this underneath your shell for an added layer of warmth
  • Thermal base layers – opt for merino wool or moisture-wicking fabrics to keep the sweat off your skin. Pack base layer tops and pants. Hot tip, cotton is not your friend when it comes to thermal base layers.
  • Warm mid layers – think fleeces and vests
  • Ski and snowboard socks – heated socks if you have them!
  • Hand warmers and toe warmers
  • A balaclava, buff or neck warmer
  • Gloves or mitts – for extra warmth, add inner gloves
  • Goggles – don't forget interchangeable sunny and low light lenses
  • Helmet – your most important accessory!

Don’t forget your skis and poles or snowboard and your ski or snowboard boots. Looking to rent these while you’re here? Check out SkiBig3’s extensive fleet of rental gear, perfect for every style and ability of skier and rider.

With plenty of après options and winter activities to keep you busy even after the lifts finish for the day, make sure to pack regular clothes and warm layers. Banff has a relaxed, ski town vibe, so think cozy knits, fluffy beanies and puffy coats.

Don't Forget!

  • A camera
  • Massage gun
  • Polarized sunglasses
  • Sun protection – sunscreen not only protects your skin from the sun, but also the wind
  • An airtag in your luggage – just in case

Celebrating 100 Years of Mt. Norquay – Centennial Celebrations

This year, Mt. Norquay turns 100, and for a resort that has taught generations of Alberta locals how to ski and snowboard, that calls for a proper, mountain-sized celebration. On May 28, Norquay is hosting a centenary “Day of Nostalgia,” bringing the community together to celebrate a century of history, heart, and that unmistakable locals’ hill vibe.
