What to Do in Canmore in Winter: A Local’s Guide

Canmore in winter has a way of making you want to slow down. The Three Sisters are covered in snow, the Bow River winds through town, and the mountains are always part of the backdrop.

For a SkiBig3 trip, Canmore makes an easy home base. You’re close to Banff and all three SkiBig3 resorts, while still having plenty to do when you’re not on the slopes.

From slow mornings and local coffee to après, Nordic spas and winter adventures, there’s more to the trip than chasing first chair.

Here’s how to make the most of a winter stay in Canmore.

Ski Three Different Mountains

Canmore is a great home base for a SkiBig3 trip, with all three resorts within easy reach. Stay in one place and ski Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise Ski Resort and Mt. Norquay throughout your trip, without having to move between destinations. SkiBig3 tickets also offer grace days, giving you added flexibility to adjust your plans around the weather and conditions.

Local tip: Keep an eye on the forecast and choose your mountain day by day. A fresh snowfall might call for one plan, while a clear bluebird day could be the perfect time to ski somewhere with big mountain views.

Start the Day in Town

Winter mornings in Canmore are made for coffee. Head downtown for something warm from locally brewed Eclipse Coffee Roasters or breakfast from Rocky Mountain Bagel Co., then take a slow walk through town before heading to the slopes.

The streets are quieter early in the morning, and on a clear day, the surrounding peaks are hard to miss. It’s also an easy chance to pick up snacks or anything you forgot before your ski day.

Go for a Winter Walk

You don’t need to be skiing every day to enjoy winter in the Rockies.

The paths around Canmore offer plenty of opportunities to get outside and take in the scenery without committing to a full-day adventure. The Bow River is particularly beautiful in winter, with snow-covered peaks surrounding the town.

Make Time for Après

A good ski day doesn’t end when you leave the mountain. Canmore has plenty of spots to settle in after skiing and riding, whether you’re looking for a local beer, something warm to eat or a night on the town.
Head downtown for local breweries, pubs and restaurants, and happy hours! If you’re heading back to Canmore from the resorts, you can also break up the drive with an après stop in Banff before continuing on to town.

Some days call for a quick drink after the lifts close. Others call for taking your ski boots off, ordering dinner and staying put.

Local tip: Bridgette Bar is a good option for an early post-ski stop, especially if you’re looking to catch happy hour. For a more elevated meal, check out the newly opened Hunter Steakhouse for a proper dinner after a day on the slopes. Follow up with live music and DJs at the Drake Screaming Retriever.

Warm Up With a Spa Day

If you’re skiing for several days in a row, make time for a slower afternoon at Everwild Nordic Spa in Canmore. Settle into the Nordic spa experience with hot and cold thermal experiences, quiet spaces and time to unwind surrounded by the Rockies. It’s an easy way to warm up, reset and give your legs a break before your next day on the slopes.

Think of it as part of the ski trip, not time away from it.

Local tip: For another way to unwind, check out Float Canmore. SkiBig3 ticket holders can get 10% off all packages on weekdays. Choose from float cabins, therapeutic massage and infrared sauna experiences to round out your recovery day.

Explore Downtown Canmore

Set aside some time to actually explore Canmore rather than treating it as a place to sleep between ski days.

Main Street is lined with independent shops, cafés, galleries and restaurants, and the surrounding streets are worth wandering too. You’ll find plenty of locally made goods, outdoor gear and places to pick up something to take home.

For dinner, check out local favourites like Rocky Mountain Flatbread, Crazyweed Kitchen or Where the Buffalo Roam for something a little more special.

Winter is also a great time to see the town after dark. Snow-covered streets, warm lights and the mountains in the background make for a classic Rockies evening.

Take a Day Off the Skis

You came to the Rockies to ski, but you don’t have to ski every single day:

  • Go dog sledding: Book a winter dog sledding tour through the Rockies for a full-day mountain experience without skis.
  • Try snowshoeing: Head to Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park for groomed winter trails and an easy way to explore the snowy landscape.
  • Go ice skating: Lace up at the Canmore Recreation Centre or find some wild ice when conditions allow.
  • Take a scenic drive: Head along the Bow Valley Parkway toward Banff for mountain views, then stop in Banff for lunch before returning to Canmore.
  • Make it a wellness day: Book a float or massage at Float Canmore, or spend the afternoon at Everwild Nordic Spa.
  • Slow down downtown: Start with a long breakfast, browse Canmore’s independent shops and galleries, then settle in for a long lunch or dinner. Sometimes the best way to make the most of a ski trip is to give yourself a day where you don’t have to chase first chair.

Local tip: Pick one main activity and leave the rest of the day open. Canmore is at its best when you don’t try to squeeze everything in.
