The Beginner's Guide to SkiBig3
Whether it’s your very first time clicking into skis or your first time visiting the Canadian Rockies, SkiBig3 makes it easy to get started. When you ski with SkiBig3, you get access to three incredible resorts, Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise Ski Resort and Mt. Norquay, all under one lift ticket. Three mountains. One pass. Endless beginner-friendly terrain.
Here’s everything you need to know to plan your first ski trip to Banff National Park without the overwhelm.
How to Get Here

Banff is just a scenic 90-minute drive west of Calgary. With daily direct flights into Calgary International Airport from across the US, Europe, and Canada, getting here is straightforward, even if you’re travelling with ski gear (or planning to rent it).
From Calgary, you can hop on a shuttle to Banff, Canmore or Lake Louise and skip renting a car altogether. Once you’re here, getting around is simple. Roam Transit’s electric buses connect the towns, and SkiBig3 offers free ski shuttles from Banff to all three resorts meaning you can focus on learning to ski, not navigating winter highways.
How to Ski

If this is your first time skiing or snowboarding, a lesson isn’t just helpful, it’s a game changer. SkiBig3’s private instructors are pros at helping beginners feel comfortable. You’ll learn basic stance, balance, stopping and turning in dedicated learning zones designed specifically for first-timers. Gentle slopes, easy surface lifts, and wide-open space mean you can practice without pressure. Lessons also cover the practical stuff: how to ride a chairlift (it’s easier than it looks), understanding trail signs, and how to move confidently and safely around the mountain. And the biggest perk of booking lessons through SkiBig3 means you can arrange your lessons, rentals and lift tickets all in one place.
Ski gear can be expensive and when you’re just getting started, renting makes way more sense. SkiBig3 offers beginner-friendly skis and snowboards, plus boots and helmets, through their Adventure Hub in Banff and Canmore. Even better? They’ll fit your gear and deliver it to your hotel. Staying in Canmore? You can book an in-room rental fitting and have the team come to you. Boots fitted. Skis adjusted. Helmet sorted. All without leaving your room. It’s about as stress-free as ski prep gets.
Where to Ski
One of the best parts about learning in Banff National Park is the space. Wide runs. Big views. Room to breathe. You won’t feel boxed in or rushed.

Banff Sunshine
Sunshine Village is known for its long season and sunny skies, and it’s a fantastic place to learn. First-timers usually start in the Mitey Mite learning area near the Strawberry Express. It’s a dedicated beginner zone where you can build confidence before hopping on a chairlift. Once you’re ready, there are plenty of gentle green runs off Strawberry Express, Wolverine Express and Standish Express. The terrain is wide, forgiving and perfect for practicing those turns.

Lake Louise Ski Resort
Lake Louise has a reputation for big mountain views, but it’s also incredibly beginner-friendly. The Sunny Side Learning Area offers gentle slopes and surface lifts with loads of space to find your rhythm. When you’re ready to explore, you’ll find cruisy green runs off chairs like Larch, Juniper and Glacier Express. A standout for progressing beginners is Richardson’s Ridge on the backside, featuring long, mellow groomers and roomy glades.

Mt. Norquay
If you ask a Banff local where they learned to ski, chances are they’ll say Norquay. This is the hill that has taught generations of locals how to link their first turns. The learning area is spacious and approachable, with two surface lifts and easy terrain to get you started. When you’re ready, Cascade and Spirit chairs offer friendly green runs that help build confidence fast. Norquay has that supportive, community feel that makes learning less intimidating and a lot more fun.

Where to Stay

When you ski and snowboard with SkiBig3, you can choose to base yourself in either Banff, Lake Louise or Canmore. Each offer the unique charm of a mountain town.
Banff is lively and walkable, packed with restaurants, cafés and shops. If you want that classic ski-town buzz, this is your spot. Ski shuttles pick up from most major hotels, making mornings easy.
Lake Louise is quieter and surrounded by nature. If you’re after a peaceful mountain escape with wildlife sightings and starry skies, this is it.
Canmore offers a slightly slower pace and a more local feel. You’ll find fantastic restaurants and more self-contained lodging options, which are great for families or groups.
What to Pack

Skiing in Banff, particularly in January and February, can be chilly, and with quickly changing mountain conditions, the correct clothes make all the difference. For days at the resorts, a wind-proof and water-proof shell jacket, insulated snow pants, an insulated puffer jacket, merino wool thermal base layers, warm mid layers and warm socks are essential. Don’t forget a helmet, warm buff or balaclava, gloves or mitts and goggles.
Once you’ve left the resort, a warm winter jacket, beanie or toque, gloves, apres outfits, waterproof boots, swimwear and slippers are always handy. Your camera, a massage gun, polarised sunglasses and sun protection is also good to bring.
Keep it Simple
If planning a ski trip feels overwhelming, SkiBig3’s ski-and-stay packages bundle lift tickets, accommodation, rentals, lessons and even airport transfers into one booking. For beginners, that simplicity makes all the difference.
Learning to ski in Banff National Park isn’t just about picking up a new skill. It’s about big Rocky Mountain views, supportive instructors, welcoming resorts and celebrating every small win, from your first stop to your first smooth turn. And who knows? This “first trip” might just turn into a lifelong tradition.
