Staying Warm in Colder Weather: Skiing & Snowboarding Essentials

Staying Warm in Colder Weather: Skiing & Snowboarding Essentials

In the north, it’s no secret that the Canadian Rockies can get cold. But that’s how we like it. When the temperatures drop, we’re rewarded with pristine powder, up to 30 feet of snow each season, and endless clear, sunny skies. To thrive in these wild, wintery conditions, you need the right gear, the right mindset, and a little know how.

At SkiBig3, we’ve learned how to embrace the cold and make it part of the adventure. Here’s what you need to know to stay warm and feel alive while skiing or snowboarding this winter.

Layer Up

Layering correctly is the foundation of staying warm in the Rockies’ dry, crisp conditions. Start with a moisture wicking base layer to keep sweat off your skin. Next, add an insulating mid layer to trap body heat, such as a fleece or down jacket. Finally, top it off with a wind & waterproof shell to protect you from the elements.

Don’t forget to accessorize! A balaclava or neck warmer, insulated gloves, and merino wool or heated socks will keep you warm. If you forget anything, visit our Banff or Canmore SkiBig3 Adventure Hubs, where you’ll find a great selection of cold weather gear.

Essential Accessories for Extra Warmth

Sometimes, it's the little things that make all the difference. Hand warmers and toe warmers are absolute essentials for staying comfortable during those extra cold days on the slopes. This season, keep an eye out for the SkiBig3 Adventure Hub’s new Toasty Packs! These handy packs will include both hand and toe warmers to help you stay cozy during your mountain adventures.

Get Toasty on the New Heated Bubble Chairs

Staying warm is easier than ever with two new heated chairlift options – 3 total across Sunshine and Lake Louise!

This season, Banff Sunshine Village introduced the brand new Super Angel LX Express 6 pack chairlift, which features heated bucket seats and a bright yellow protective bubble, keeping you cozy as you ascend the mountain. Banff Sunshine is also home to the original TeePee Town LX, with heated seats and an orange bubble. Together, these make Banff Sunshine the ultimate destination for warm, comfortable rides.

At Lake Louise Ski Resort, keep an eye out for the Pipestone Express, opening soon! This new lift features heated seats and a sleek blue bubble, ensuring your ride is as comfortable as it is scenic. Combine these heated chairs with gondola rides to take a break from the elements between runs.

Take Frequent Breaks and Ski Shorter Days

Cold weather can drain your energy quickly, so it's important to pace yourself. Arriving later in the day allows you to avoid chilly mornings and take advantage of the warmer afternoon temperatures.
Between runs, take a moment to warm up at one of the many lodges or warming spots available across the resorts.

Here are just a few options to get you started:

  • Banff Sunshine Village: Visit the warming tent near the top of the gondola or one at Goat’s Eye mid station.
  • Lake Louise Ski Resort: Stop into the Lodge of Ten Peaks or if your on the backside stop in at Temple Lodge
  • Mt. Norquay: Head to the cozy Cascade Lodge

Warm Up with Hearty Food and Drinks

A day in the cold demands good food to keep you going. All resorts offer a variety of delicious options to fuel you throughout the day. Whether you’re grabbing a warming soup, a bowl of ramen, a plate of poutine, or something to sweeten your break, you’ll find plenty of choices to keep your energy up and your body warm. And, of course, there's always a hot chocolate waiting to defrost your hands and recharge your spirits.

For a true après ski experience, visit the Bluebird x SkiBig3 Happy Hour. Cozy up on the heated patio and indulge in half price fondue, available all season long. Pair it with a signature SkiBig3 cocktail for the perfect post ski wind down.
