Ski More in the New Year: Tips on How to Make This Resolution Real

New Year’s resolutions are on everyone’s minds at this time of year because, whether or not you buy into the idea, it is impossible not to want to shed those few extra holiday pounds or not want to get a touch more fit.  Because really, who ever thought –  ‘Hey, I’m already way too fit’.

Let’s face it: unless the goals you set are easy to implement and fun, most people won’t follow through.  So to narrow the gap between the plan and fruition, why not commit to something fun – more days on the ski hill – to improve your fitness in 2015?

Here are three tips on how to coax yourself onto the slopes with more frequency:

1. Sign up for ski lessons.

There is always room for improving your skiing. If you ski green, you want blue. If you ski black, you want double. So why not sign up for multi-day ski lessons? You will be surprized how much slicker your turns will be with a little professional coaching and once you have paid, you are committed to getting yourself to the mountain no matter your mood or the conditions of the day. Try the Club Ski program: it runs over 3 days and thus requires less commitment than a multi-week program or treat yourself to a private ski lesson on a day you would be tempted to lounge around at home.

2. Buy your tickets in bulk.

If you don’t plan ahead and purchase your lift tickets at the window, not only are you going to wait in line but you miss out on serious savings offered when you buy multi-days packages. The more days you buy, the more you save and the more days you commit to skiing – thus killing the temptation to sleep in and laze around on your ski vacation. Combining your lift tickets with a multi-day accommodation package is the best way to save and get in more ski days.

3. Take advantage of all three hills and change up your routine.

In Banff National Park, we have the incredible luxury of having three ski resorts in close proximity. Sunshine Village, Lake Louise Ski Resort and Mount Norquay are within easy distance of each other. So if you are here for a quick visit, commit to exploring all the resorts. Buy tri-area lift tickets to gain access to all three thereby committing yourself to at least 3 days of skiing on your vacation and perhaps adding the extra motivation needed to squeeze in a half day on your departure day. You don’t want to go home and have to admit you missed out on one of the three resorts right?

If you have skied all three and have a clear favorite, get out of your routine! Night skiing at Mount Norquay starts in January so consider adding an additional ski day into your weekly schedule by heading to the resort Friday or Saturday evening between 5 and 10pm.
