Do You Need a Car to Ski Banff? Your Options for Getting Around Without One

Planning a ski trip to Banff National Park and wondering if you need to rent a car? Good news: you can leave the keys at home!

Between airport transfers, complimentary ski shuttles and local public transit, getting around Banff and Lake Louise and reaching SkiBig3’s legendary ski resorts is easier than you might think.

Whether you're flying into Calgary International Airport or planning a longer stay in the Canadian Rockies, here's how to make the most of your SkiBig3 ski trip without a rental car.

Getting from Calgary Airport to Banff

Your car-free ski trip starts at Calgary International Airport (YYC), about a 90-minute drive from the town of Banff. Rather than renting a vehicle, you can book an airport shuttle that takes you directly to your Banff accommodation.

Airport transfers are available through SkiBig3 when booking your vacation package, making it easy to arrange transportation before you arrive.

Banff Airporter picks up from the airports and has one stop in Canmore for drop off, and multiple hotels stops in Banff. Brewster Express is another option and offers pickups in downtown Calgary.

Once you're checked in, you can settle into mountain time without worrying about winter driving, parking or navigating unfamiliar roads.

Planning tip: Book your airport transfer ahead of time, particularly during busy winter periods, and check your arrival time against the available shuttle schedule. Remember to allow enough time for customs and immigration and avoid very early or late arrival/departure times!

Getting to the Ski Resorts Without a Car

Here's where traveling without a car really pays off. SkiBig3 brings together three legendary ski resorts in Banff National Park: Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise Ski Resort and Mt. Norquay. Each offers a different mountain experience, and you can get to all three without driving yourself.

With a valid SkiBig3 Lift Ticket, Ikon or Mountain Collective pass, complimentary ski shuttle service takes you from Banff to your choice of resort. Shuttles operate from convenient stops around town, with multiple departure times throughout the day.

Here's how to get to each mountain.

Banff Sunshine Village:

Head to Banff Sunshine for elevated high-alpine skiing, wide-open terrain and plenty of natural snow. The resort is located outside the Town of Banff, up the Sunshine access road, so taking the shuttle saves you the drive and the need to find parking.

Lake Louise Ski Resort:

The shuttle makes getting to Lake Louise Ski Resort straightforward, with transportation making your commute across the Trans-Canada Highway easy and seamless. Spend the day exploring its expansive terrain, then take in the view on the way back to Banff.

Mt. Norquay:

Just minutes from downtown Banff, Mt. Norquay is known as Banff’s backyard. Its short transfer makes it an easy addition to your ski itinerary, whether you're planning a full day on the slopes or fitting in a few runs.

Before you go: Check the SkiBig3 shuttle schedule before heading out. Departure times and stops can change throughout the season, and seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Getting Around the Town of Banff

Once you're back in town, you won't need a car to get around, either. Banff's downtown core is compact and walkable, with restaurants, cafés, shops and plenty of places to unwind after a day on the mountain.
Depending on where you're staying, you may be able to walk to dinner, browse Banff Avenue or grab a coffee before catching your morning ski shuttle.

For destinations a little farther away, ROAM Public Transit connects different parts of Banff and the wider Bow Valley. Routes serve local attractions and connect Banff with neighboring Canmore, with regional services also available to the village of Lake Louise.

Visitor Tip: Some Banff hotels include complimentary ROAM transit passes for guests, so it's worth checking what's included when you book your accommodation.

What About Getting Around Lake Louise and Beyond?

If you're staying in the Town of Banff, you can comfortably plan your ski days around the SkiBig3 shuttles. However, if you're staying in Lake Louise or hoping to explore other parts of Banff National Park, it's worth checking transportation options for your specific plans.

Public transit and commercial shuttles connect several popular destinations, but services vary by route and season. Not every trailhead, viewpoint or attraction is accessible by the same transportation options, so a little planning goes a long way.

For a winter ski trip focused on Banff's three resorts, staying in Banff and using the free ski shuttle network is a straightforward way to keep things simple.

Do You Ever Need to Rent a Car?

A rental car can be useful if you want more flexibility with your itinerary, are staying somewhere outside the main transit network, such as in Canmore, or plan to explore destinations beyond the usual shuttle routes.

But if your main goal is to ski all three SkiBig3 resorts, enjoy Banff's restaurants and explore the town between ski days; a car is far from essential.

Travelling without one can also mean less time thinking about winter road conditions and parking, and more time doing what you came for: skiing the Canadian Rockies.

Make Your SkiBig3 Trip a Little Easier

A great ski trip doesn't have to involve a rental car. Book an airport transfer, choose accommodation within easy reach of Banff's downtown or shuttle stops, and use the complimentary SkiBig3 ski shuttles to get to the mountains.

With three legendary ski resorts, a walkable mountain town and transportation options to help you get around, your Banff ski trip can be all about the skiing.
