Banff for the Non Hiker: Relaxed Ways to Experience the Rockies
Love the mountains but not into steep trails or full day hikes? You’re not alone, and you’re definitely not missing out. Banff and Lake Louise offer plenty of ways to take in the beauty of the Canadian Rockies without ever lacing up a pair of hiking boots. From gondola rides to lakeside paddles, here are a few relaxed, non hiking adventures to help you make the most of summer vacation in the mountains.
Take in the views without the climb
You don’t need to hike to reach incredible mountain views. Banff and Lake Louise offer a few unforgettable ways to soar above the valleys and enjoy the scenery from a whole new perspective.
Ride Mt. Norquay’s North American Chairlift, the best seat in Banff National Park. This open air journey carries you into the sky, where panoramic views stretch endlessly across the horizon. It’s a breathtaking way to take in Banff, no hiking boots required.
At Lake Louise Ski Resort, catch a ride on either the open air chairlift or the enclosed gondola to reach an elevation of 2,101 metres (6,893 feet). From the top, enjoy wide open views of the famous Lake Louise, distant glaciers, and (if you're lucky) a grizzly bear spotting in the distance. It’s a relaxing way to take in the iconic beauty of the Rockies.
And over at Banff Sunshine, known in summer as Sunshine Meadows, you’ll find some of the most spectacular alpine walking paths in the region. Ride the gondola and then Strawberry Chairlift to the top and stroll along gentle trails that pass colourful wildflowers and three scenic alpine lakes, Larix, Grizzly, and Rock Isle. It’s peaceful, scenic, and easy to explore at your own pace.

Paddle Through Banff and Lake Louise
Prefer water over elevation? Canoeing or kayaking on Lake Louise or Two Jack Lake is a great way to enjoy the Rockies from a calmer point of view. The turquoise waters and towering peaks create a postcard perfect setting for a quiet paddle.
If you don’t have your own gear, stop by the SkiBig3 Adventure Hub in Banff to rent an inflatable kayak or stand up paddleboard. These portable rentals are easy to transport and quick to set up, giving you everything you need to explore the lake on your own schedule.

See the Scenery by Car (or with a Guide)
For those who love nature but prefer to keep it casual, Banff’s scenic drives are a must. Take your time cruising the Bow Valley Parkway or the Icefields Parkway, two of the most beautiful roads in Canada. Along the way, you might spot elk, deer, bears, and big horn sheep right from your car window.
If you’d rather leave the driving to someone else, book a guided sightseeing tour. Local guides can take you to the best photo spots, share insights about the area’s wildlife and geology, and make sure you don’t miss a thing, without ever needing to step on a trail.

Relaxed Dining with a View
After a day of exploring, there’s no better way to unwind than on a sunny patio or inside a cozy restaurant with mountain views. Banff and Lake Louise are filled with scenic dining spots, like Sky Bistro at the top of Sulphur Mountain or the Juniper Bistro, known for its laid back atmosphere and incredible backdrop.
Want to keep it casual? Stop by a local café, grab a pastry and coffee, and enjoy the view from a bench in Central Park or by the Bow River.

There are so many ways to enjoy Banff and Lake Louise without hitting the trails. From mountain views to lakeside lounging, the Rockies are just as amazing when you’re taking it slow.
