August Snow in the Canadian Rockies: Winter Is Never Too Far Away

Summer might be in full swing, but the mountains are already giving us a little reminder of what’s ahead.
Banff Sunshine Village saw a fresh dusting of snow in early August, bringing a little winter stoke to the middle of summer!

It also feels fitting after the kind of winter the Canadian Rockies just had. The 2025/26 season was a big one for SkiBig3, with Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise Ski Resort and Mt. Norquay all delivering plenty of reasons to stay on the mountain.

Sunshine had an extended season that lasts into the end of May and then returned for more than two weeks of summer skiing in June and July.

That summer skiing was a sweet bonus after a long winter, with lifts spinning, runs open and terrain parks set up for skiers and snowboarders looking to squeeze a few more turns out of the season. Not a bad way to spend the start of summer.

One ticket, three resorts

Of course, Banff Sunshine is just one part of the SkiBig3 experience.

Across the valley, Lake Louise Ski Resort is already looking ahead to another season of big mountain days. With its wide-open alpine terrain, long runs and views across the Canadian Rockies, Lake Louise brings a completely different feel to the three-resort lineup.

Then there’s Mt. Norquay, the local favorite and located right in Banff’s Backyard. Norquay is a big part of Banff’s ski history and celebrated its 100th anniversary last season. Now the resort looks ahead into the next century with its ‘Norquay 100 Vision’.

Together, the three resorts give skiers and snowboarders access to 7,748 acres of terrain across three distinct mountains.

A little snow goes a long way

An August snowfall might seem like a small thing, but when you’re waiting for winter, it’s enough to get the imagination going.

It’s a reminder of the change that happens in the Rockies every fall. Green mountains gradually give way to fresh snow, temperatures drop, and the focus shifts back to early-morning laps and deep winter days.
