5 Canadian Experiences You Can't Miss in Banff and Lake Louise

Nestled in the Canadian Rockies, Banff and Lake Louise offer a winter wonderland like no other. From world class skiing to breathtaking landscapes and unique culinary adventures, these destinations are packed with unforgettable experiences. Ready to explore the north? Here are five must do activities that will make your visit truly memorable.

1. Skiing SkiBig3

If you’re heading to Banff and Lake Louise between November and mid May, skiing is a must. The SkiBig3 resorts – Banff Sunshine, Lake Louise Ski Resort, and Mt Norquay, offers some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the world. With over 8,000 acres of skiable terrain, there’s something for every level, from gentle groomers to challenging steeps.

At SkiBig3, you’ll find Canada’s three only heated bubble chairs. The Super Angel LX Express and Tee-Pee Town LX at Banff Sunshine and the Pipestone Express at Lake Louise  featuring heated seats and weather protection hoods designed to keep you warm as you ride up the mountain. With stunning views of the Canadian Rockies and a variety of runs to explore, skiing here is about more than just the slopes. Mt Norquay offers a mix of terrain, plus, it’s the only resort in the area with weekend night skiing, giving you more time to enjoy the snow.

2. Ice Skating on Lake Louise

Ice skating on Lake Louise is a magical experience that shouldn’t be missed. Surrounded by towering peaks and the iconic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, this outdoor rink is one of the most beautiful in the world. Glide across the frozen lake with stunning mountain views all around you.

You can rent skates on site at the Fairmont Chateau or in Banff before heading out. Getting there is easy with the Roam bus, which has a route that takes you directly to the Lake Louise lakeshore. Whether you’re practicing your spins or just taking in the scenery, skating on Lake Louise is a unique Canadian winter experience.

3. Exploring Johnston Canyons Ice Walk

A visit to Johnston Canyon in winter is like stepping into another world. The frozen waterfalls and icy cliffs create a breathtaking landscape that’s perfect for exploring. The trail follows suspended catwalks through the canyon, leading to the stunning Upper Falls, where you can see climbers scaling the ice walls.

You can explore the canyon on your own or join a guided tour. Either way, ice cleats are recommended as the paths can be slippery. The Roam bus operates a route to Johnston Canyon on weekends and statutory holidays in winter, making it easy to visit without a car. This is an unforgettable adventure that shows off the beauty of Banff National Park.

4. Soaking in the Banff Upper Hot Springs

After a day of exploring, there’s nothing better than relaxing at the Banff Upper Hot Springs. Located on Sulphur Mountain, these natural mineral pools are the perfect place to soak and take in the views of snow capped peaks.

With water temperatures ranging from 37°C to 40°C (98.6°F to 104°F), the hot springs provide a warm and relaxing escape from the cold mountain air. It’s a great way to unwind and recharge for another day of adventure. Whether you visit in the morning for a peaceful start or in the evening under the stars, the Banff Upper Hot Springs are a must do.

5. Indulging in Local and International Famed Cuisine

No visit to Banff and Lake Louise is complete without indulging in the local culinary scene. From cozy mountain lodges to award winning restaurants, this region offers a taste of Canada’s wild flavours, with a focus on locally sourced ingredients and northern inspired dishes.

Start your day with a steaming mug of locally roasted coffee and a freshly baked pastry at one of Banff’s charming cafes like Wild Flower Bakery or Sudden Sally. For lunch be sure to try a Canadian classic poutine, crisp fries topped with rich gravy and squeaky cheese curds.

Looking for something truly unique? Visit The Juniper Bistro in Banff for locally inspired dishes with a panoramic view of the Rockies, or head to the Lakeview Lounge at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise for après ski drinks with a spectacular view of the frozen lake. And if you’re craving something sweet, don’t miss the chance to try a Beavertail a Canadian pastry topped with cinnamon sugar or maple spread.
