The winter ski and snowboard season in Banff National Park is OFFICIALLY HERE with Mt. Norquay opening as of Saturday, October 24th! This makes it not only the earliest opening date in its 95-year-history, but the earliest opening of any ski resort in Canada for the 2020-21 season!
“The snow came early, and so we got ready early!” says Andre Quenneville, General Manager of Mt. Norquay. “And it’s already looking great; really nice conditions for such an early point in the season – we’re excited to see skiers return and get out there!”
After the consistent snowfall and perfectly chill temperatures seen over the last week, the resort, just a ten-minute drive from the townsite of Banff, now has the snow covering ready for opening; an ideal base for enhancing the natural conditions with some snow-making – which the resort has been undertaking over recent days.
Mt. Norquay is typically one of the first resorts to open for the ski season, no stranger to claiming the first-to- open title in previous years. This year, as the resort has been meticulously preparing each aspect of the resort and shaping the guest experience for somewhat of a different season, Quenneville is encouraging Albertans to embrace the purity of ski days.
What to Expect
For opening day, Mt. Norquay will be operating the Cascade Chair, with the Cascade Lodge accessible to guests. The Sundance Carpet learning terrain will also be open. To follow, will be the opening of the Spirit Chair, Mystic Express Chair, North American Chair, and the tube park, as soon as winter conditions allow. From opening day onward, Mt. Norquay will be open from 9 am to 4 pm, 7 days a week.
Daily lift ticket sales have been limited for Saturday and Sunday on opening weekend. Tickets must be pre-purchased before arrival, and season pass holders must complete their online waiver prior to arriving. Mt. Norquay asks that all guests familiarize themselves with their Covid-19 protocols prior to arriving to know what to expect.
