Traveling with your ski gear can be a bit of a hassle not to mention an added expense when even your boot bag counts as a separate piece of luggage. So why not travel light? Rent gear. With a number of different options available in Banff National Park, knowing where to go to rent gear can be a serious advantage. With prices across the board staying fairly consistent (running $36 for a midrange package and $55 for a high-performance package with only a two to three dollar price difference from one vendor to the next), it’s best to opt for convenience and expertise. So to save you the time of comparison-shopping, here is a cheat sheet of the most convenient and well-staffed rental places.
Both Sunshine Village and Mount Norquay have rental locations on mountain but if you intend to hit more than one resort, heading to The SkiBig3 Adventure Hub in town is likely your best bet. Conveniently located right on Banff Avenue, The SkiBig3 Adventure Hub carries both midrange and high-performance ski and snowboard rentals which they will deliver to your hotel free of charge once you have been sized. Knowledgeable ski/snowboard techs will size you to ensure you get the gear best suited to your skill and comfort level. Make that gear yours for the duration of your stay and receive discounts on 3- and 6-day bundles. When you are done with your gear, The Ski Hub has a number of convenient locations where you can drop off your gear including all three ski hills and select hotels. Added bonus: The Ski Hub conveniently carry a selection of tuques (beanies), gloves, goggles and helmets – all those little things you may forget to pack – as well as souvenir t-shirts, hoodies and hats with Sunshine Village, Lake Louise Ski Resort and Mount Norquay logos.
In Lake Louise
Lake Louise is a significantly smaller town than Banff so fewer options are available. However, if you have booked accommodation in Lake Louise and don’t plan a stop in Banff, it is generally easier to rent gear once you have arrived in Lake Louise. The Lake Louise Ski Resort has its own rental fleet including a variety of Salomon, Rossignol, Nodica and Elan skis as well as a selection of Salomon boards. Ski packages start at $42/day and boards at $41. By renting them on the hill, you have the option of swapping for a different model if the equipment isn’t working for you. Wilson Mountain Sports has comparably priced gear but its location in the village does involve and extra stop.
