That’s a wrap! As another season of skiing & riding in the Canadian Rockies draws to a close, it’s time to reflect back on the indelible moments that made up this epic winter. Here are some of our favorite memories from the 2015/16 season that lasted exactly 201 days. From big powder storms in November to blue bird spring days in late May it has been an amazing winter!

Opening Day in the Canadian Rockies

At exactly 10:00 am, on Thursday, November 5th, the bull wheel at Mt. Norquay began to turn. This made Norquay the first Alberta ski resort to open for the 2015-16 season and signified the start of its 90th season in operation.

Winterstart Festival

Setting the stage for the winter season, Banff & Lake Louise ran a month-long festival celebrating the season. This included everything from the annual Winterstart World Cup Race at The Lake Louise Resort, Bon Appètit Banff and a parade down main street.

The New TeePee Town LX at Sunshine Village

Sunshine Village officially opened the first heated high speed quad chairlift in Canada: the TeePee Town LX. This state-of-the-art lift kept skiers and boarders warm and protected from the wind throughout the season and improved access to some coveted terrain.

Early Season Powder Days

Powder storms filled the month of November, including an epic snowfall on November 17th. This allowed a strong base to form across all three mountain resorts and excitement to grow among skiers and snowboarders.

A Quintessential Christmas

Mt. Norquay’s 90th anniversary

Cupid was busy on Valentine’s Day at both the Lake Louise Ski Resort & Sunshine Village but he also took time to take care of the single crowd at Norquay’s annual Valentine’s Lifts of Love. Blue Bird skies and balmy temps in early-April brought great spring conditions to Banff-Lake Louise-Sunshine. Taking advantage of the long daylight hours found in the Canadian Rockies, skiers were able to combine a full day on the slopes with some memorable après patio time.

Slush Cup & the Pond Skimming World Championships

Sunshine Village finished the season with a splash on Sunday May, 23rd with the 88th Annual Slush Cup and inaugural Pond Skimming World Cup. An enthusiastic crowd cheered on costumed competitors as they raced down the track to skim the icy pond. Qualifiers from across North America trekked to Sunshine Village to test their skills in hopes of claiming the cup and title of World Champion.
