World Cup stays loyal to Lake Louise Ski Area

October 14th, 2008: BANFF-LAKE LOUISE, Alberta, Canada

The Lake Louise Ski Area looks set to host the International Ski Federation’s (FIS’s) World Cup Winterstart races for the next four years.

The FIS have approved a tentative schedule which will see Canada’s largest single ski resort continue to host the men’s and women’s downhill and super G events until at least 2011.

“There is a very proud tradition of World Cup ski racing at Lake Louise as host of the first speed events of the FIS World Cup season and North America’s only Club 5+ World Cup site,” said John Cassels, Bombardier Lake Louise World Cup Chairman. “We are pleased for the hardworking volunteers and staff, as well as our world class partners.”

Lake Louise Ski Area was the first resort outside Europe to be included in the prestigious Club 5+, a union of 13 leading alpine ski race organizers.

The decision by the FIS Committee is due to be approved by the FIS Council at a meeting in November, shortly prior to this years races. The Downhill and Super G races will be held for the men on 29-30 November 2008, and the women on 5-7 December 2008 and, as always, they’re sure to be exciting to watch.

This decision confirms Lake Louise’s success in hosting the events and guaranteeing great early-season snow conditions, which the Banff-Lake Louise region is renowned for.
