Delirium Dive – the king of extreme skiing – opens at Sunshine Village

March 27th, 2009: BANFF-LAKE LOUISE, Alberta, Canada

The ultimate big mountain experience is back at Sunshine Village. The world-famous Delirium Dive extreme skiing terrain opened Friday, after months of anticipation.

The free ride zone features more than 600 acres of steep and deep terrain that remains a favourite with enthusiasts.

Early season conditions exist, and entrance to the area is subject to visibility conditions. For the latest, please call: (403) 762-6511.

Named one of the world’s 10 best off-piste destinations by the Sydney Morning Herald, Delirium Dive is not for the faint-hearted. Skiers and riders must be equipped with an avalanche transceiver, shovel, and a similarly equipped partner to gain access to the Dive.

Natural features include 20-metre cornices, frozen waterfalls, stepped pillow drops, jagged rock spines, and 25-metre cliffs. They are unmarked and exist throughout Delirium Dive.

Skiers and boarders need to use good judgment, know their own skill level, and understand that mountain conditions may change quickly.

Newcomers without previous big mountain experience are recommended to join Sunshine Village’s Ski and Snowboard School for their Delirium Sundays program. Instructors help to navigate the difficult terrain and provide various route options. For more information, click here.

Delirium Dive is open, weather permitting. Patrol reserves the right to refuse anyone who they deem ill-equipped or ill-prepared.

For current information on both of Sunshine’s Freeride Zones, daily recorded updates are available by phoning (403) 762-6511.

Sunshine has had more than 480 centimetres of snow this year, and a snow pack of 170 centimetres.
