January 16th, 2008: BANFF-LAKE LOUISE, Alberta, Canada
Ski Canada Magazine annually lists the best of the best in all aspects of Canadian skiing. The awards focus on intense terrain, cheap deals, deep powder and newest improvements. They also note the finer aspects in ski holidays such as drinking, atmosphere and best places to party. See below for what Ski Banff-Lake Louise-Sunshine won in this year’s edition.
Best place for a noon-er – Norquay’s by-the-hour lift pass offers the chance to ride the slopes for as little or as long as you like.
Best scene setters – Lake Louise Mountain Resort and Sunshine Village for best scenery on hill.
Best party – Sunshine Village Slush Cup. Other mentions include Kokanee Snow Dreams at Fernie, Winter Carnival at Rossland, Whitewater’s Cold Smoke and Telus Ski and Snowboard Festival at Whistler.
Best places for a quickie – long, fast and custom built runs for cruising. The Men’s and Women’s downhill run at Lake Louise came in first along with Peak to Creek at Whistler, the OSV at Sun Peaks and Franz’s at Panorama.
Best looking octogenarian – ‘This is Sunshine’s 80th anniversary and the old girl is still riding high.’
Best boy toy – New for 2007 and exclusive to Sunshine Village, the SlopeTracker calculates your top speed, number of runs, calories burned and hours skiing. Comes with proof-of-prowess certificate.
Best celebrity moment – Sunshine Village for the Celebrity Sports Invitational.
Honourable mention – the ‘Ski Biscuit’ team (complete with plastic ‘race’ horses) at Sunshine’s annual Bozo Cup.
