February 1st, 2008: BANFF-LAKE LOUISE, Alberta, Canada
Sunshine Village is proud to host the Arc’teryx SUNSHINE 5000 – Ski Mountaineering Competition on February 2nd in conjunction with The Alpine Club of Canada.
Ski mountaineering (or randonnée racing) is a winter sport that combines athletic skiing and mountaineering skills over medium distances, incorporating technical ascents and descents. Athletes employ skins with alpine touring, telemark, or split-board gear to gain elevation and then descend typical ski slopes.
The mountaineering event will feature two categories consisting of males and females over two courses consisting of an introductory course and a race course for advanced mountaineers. The race will begin for both divisions at 9 am in front of the Sunshine Day Lodge start area. All racers are expected to cross the finish line in front of the Day Lodge by 12:00 pm.
